Another Mary Meeker presentation and some key insights:
It seems the normal mobile subscriber spends about 40 minutes per day with ~70% time being voice. An iPhone user spends about 60 minutes per day usage with only 45% being voice. Looking at the various services we expect to be instantly available on the handset, it’s no wonder.
And when we talk of Apple, it reminds me of RIM. In defence of RIM, I always felt that so long as mobile users need an efficient messaging system, there is hope for the blackberry. My expectations received a shock: social networking has actually exceeded email traffic both in terms of users and usage. I had seen this data before but hoped it was quirky. Now it stands confirmed.
And if that wasn’t enough, the fastest growth of mobile internet traffic has been video. Well here the screen size certainly matters.
But it does leave a question. The whole point of the presentation seemed to be to drive home the fact that mobile internet has finally reached its flexion point. The question is – is the growth and take-up being driven by the mobile app boom or will it be at the expense of the apps? The latter seems too moot a possibility right now. I guess the internet growth we are talking about is essentially the hosting of these applications in the cloud and hence the corresponding data traffic.
